What To Wear on a Grizzly Bear Tour in 2023

So, you’re going on a grizzly bear tour! Now you’re faced with the question: what do I wear?

Our Grizzly Bear Expedition runs yearly from late August until mid-October. You’ll enjoy a 2-hour boat ride from Campbell River to Bute Inlet, followed by a 3-hour land-based excursion up the Orford River.

Because at this time we’re shifting into fall, the weather can vary depending on when you come, and even throughout the day. Here are some recommendations on what to wear as you travel deep into the mainland of British Columbia on your grizzly bear adventure this year.

Layers, layers, layers!

Dress in layers – you’ll be glad you did. It can be chilly while underway on the boat, and warm while you’re in Bute Inlet watching the grizzlies. Being able to add or remove a layer will ensure your utmost comfort. Here’s what we recommend wearing:

  • Thin short-sleeved shirt
  • Sweater
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Long pants
  • Closed-toe shoes or boots

If it’s forecasted to be a rainy day, dress for the occasion. The rain doesn’t deter the bears, and can even make the viewing opportunities better! A waterproof jacket, waterproof pants, and waterproof shoes/boots will be your best friend. Keep in mind, the specially-built viewing towers are covered and will protect you from any rain.

As we get further into fall and near the end of our season, or on a day forecasted to be a bit chilly, consider bringing an extra layer just in case.

Accessories

Other items you can bring include:

  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen

We also recommend bringing a bag along and stowing it under your seat while the vessel is underway.
